Section 8 Waiting List Status: Open

Affordable Housing Online is tracking the status of the Housing Authority of the City of New Britain Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Waiting List. This is what we know as of our most recent update on June 8th, 2016.

The Housing Authority of the City of New Britain (HACNB) is currently accepting Section 8 Project-Based Voucher pre-applications for elderly (62+) households, until December 30, 2016.

New Britain, CT is about 10 miles southwest of Hartford, CT.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is NOT the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program. The Section 8 Project-Based Voucher program operates similarly to Public Housing, in which tenants must live in a specific unit to receive housing assistance. For HCV information, please scroll down below the PBV section.

Please note: This opening is for 1 and 2 bedroom units at The Jefferson.

There are three ways to apply:

  1.  Download and print the pre-application online here. Click the "DOWNLOAD" link on the bottom right corner of the "Jefferson Project Based Waiting List Open" section.
  2. Pick up a pre-application at the HACNB office, located at 16 Armistice St, New Britain, CT 06053.
  3. Pick up a pre-application at The Jefferson Leasing Office, located at 2380 Corbin Ave, New Britain, CT 06053.
Once the pre-application has been completed, it must be mailed to:

Pre-applications must be mailed no later than December 30, 2016.

Important note: Applicants who have been placed on the waiting list must inform the housing authority immediately if your application information changes (such as contact information, income, and household members). In the case that the office sends a notice that does not get returned, or if application information is out of date, your name may be terminated from the waiting list. The Housing Authority of the City of New Britain (HACNB) Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list is currently closed. It was last open for four days in October 2015. There is no notice of when this waiting list will reopen.

New Britain, CT is about 10 miles southwest of Hartford, CT.

To applyduring the opening period, applicants were required to download and print the pre-application online. The pre-application was available in English and Spanish. The website does not load on the Google Chrome browser. Only one pre-application per household was accepted. No paper pre-applications or phone calls were accepted.

The HACNB placed 1,000 applicants on the waiting list by random lottery.

Applicants who have been placed on the waiting list will be notified by mail.

Public Housing Waiting List Status : Open

Affordable Housing Online is tracking the status of the Housing Authority of the City of New Britain Public Housing Waiting Lists. This is what we know as of our most recent update May 22nd, 2015.

The New Britain Housing Authority is currently accepting public housing waiting list applications for families and senior/disabled individuals.


This housing authority has six senior communities, and two family communities, located throughout New Britain.

There are three ways to apply for public housing:

1. Request an application be mailed to you by calling 860-225-3534, during normal office hours.
2. Stop in the housing authority office to pick up an application, located at 16 Armistice St., New Britain, CT 06053.
3. Follow this link to download, print, and complete an application.

Once the application has been completed, it must be mailed to the address listed above. Please include copies of these items with your application: birth certificate, social security cards, 2 letters of reference, police record check for the past three years, landlord check, photo IDs for all adult household members, and proof of income.

This housing authority does not have a preference, your application will be placed by date and time received.

The Housing Authority of the City of New Britain administers both a public housing and Section 8 housing voucher program. The housing authority owns and manages 8 projects which contain 803 affordable rental units. It also administers 851 Section 8 housing vouchers.

This score is a reflection of how well the housing authority manages the Section 8 waiting list, the physical quality of housing assisted with Section 8 and the financial management of the program.

From 2001 to 2009, Housing Authority of the City of New Britain scored an average of 81 points as of the last set of publicly available data. The housing authority had a high score of 104 in 2009 and a low score of 52 in 2001. The average SEMAP Score for Housing Authorities in Connecticut is 74.43.

Housing Authority Annual and 5 Year Plans

Public housing agencies, also called public housing authorities, which receive funding from HUD, are required to submit and receive approval from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development of both an Annual Plan and a 5 Year Plan. These plans establish each housing authority’s policies, strategies, programs and operations for meeting the housing needs of persons within their target area.

The housing authority plans include specific details about the cost of renovations to real estate (also known as capital improvements), changes to Section 8 HCV policies, planned redevelopment of public housing projects and other major administrative changes.
