Open Until Further Notice: DeKalb County, Illinois Limited Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Waiting List

This waiting list is for Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher rental housing assistance in DeKalb County, Illinois.

The Housing Authority of the County of DeKalb (HACD) is accepting Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list applications from the earliest confirmed open date of April 19, 2024, until further notice. This is the first time the waiting list has been open since it closed in October, 2019.

Please note: According to the HACD, it, "is ONLY accepting applications from applicants that are ELDERLY or DISABLED for its Housing Choice Voucher waiting lists."

This waiting list has the following preferences: Families with children, working, live or work in DeKalb County, IL, rent burdened, continuum of care. Further explanation of each preference can be found here.

Applicants will be placed on the waiting list by date and time the application is received, by order of preferences.

Selection Process

2,500 selected applicants will be placed on the waiting list by date and time the application is received, by order of preferences.

Open Until Further Notice: 1, 2, and 3-Bedroom Limited Public Housing Waiting List

The Housing Authority of the County of DeKalb (HACD) Public Housing waiting list for 1, 2, and 3-Bedroom apartments is currently open on a limited basis. Applications are being accepted since at least August, 2017, until further notice.

According to the HACD, "applicants must have 2 or more local preferences and be income eligible to be added to the Low Income Public Housing waiting list." The preferences are listed below.

To apply during the opening period, complete the online application.

This waiting list has the following preferences: 

  • Family Preference
    • Head of household or spouse has legal custody of a minor child or children. If the head of household or spouse is elderly (62 or older) or disabled they qualify for this preference.
  • Working Preference
    • Head, spouse, or sole member of the household is employed. Elderly (62 or older) or disabled head or spouse qualify for this preference.
  • Residency Preference
    • Applicant family resides or works (permanent non-temporary job) within the County of DeKalb Illinois.
  • Rent Burden
    • Applicant family is currently paying more than 50% of their family/household income for rent.
  • Continuum of Care
    • Applicant family is currently residing in Emergency Shelter, Transitional Shelter, Permanent Supportive Housing or participating in homeless services at/in/through a participating DeKalb County Continuum of Care agency such as Hope Have, Safe Passage, etc and have received a written letter of recommendation from that agency not less than 30 days ago.

Open Until Further Notice: Sequoya Apartments Other Senior and Disabled Waiting List

This waiting list is for Other Senior and Disabled rental housing assistance in Shabbona, Illinois.

The Housing Authority of the County of DeKalb (HACD) Elderly/Disabled Project-Based Section 8 waiting list for apartments at Sequoya Apartments is currently open. Applications are being accepted since at least April, 2021, until further notice.

Please note: According to the HACD, this waiting list is "open to household’s where the Head, Spouse or Sole member is elderly (62 or older) OR has a verifiable disability, is income eligible. Apartments are for the elderly and/or disabled individuals or couples ONLY."

To apply during the opening period, complete the online application.
