Open Until Further Notice: Clay, Kanawha, and Putnam County, West Virginia Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Waiting List

The Charleston-Kanawha Housing Authority (CKHA) is accepting Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list applications from September 9, 2019 at 9:00 am ET, until further notice.

There are two ways to apply during the opening period:

  1. Complete the online pre-application. After applying, the required documentation listed below must be submitted to the CKHA within 10 business days.
  2. Open and print the paper pre-application online. Paper pre-applications will be available until March 31, 2020.

According to the CKHA, the following documentation is required:

  • "A current mailing address
  • Photo IDs for every household member 18 or older
  • Birth certificates for every household member
  • Social Security cards for every household member
  • Proof of Income - 2 consecutive pay stubs or SSA benefits statement"

Once the paper application and required documentation has been completed, they must be either:

  1. Mailed to the CKHA, 1525 Washington Street, Charleston, WV 25387, ATTN: Applications.
  2. Hand delivered to the CKHA at the address above.
  3. Emailed to applications@ckha.com.

This waiting list has the following preferences:

  • Working Preference:
    • A preference is give to families where the head, spouse, or sole member is employed at least 20 hours per week, or where the head of household, co-head or spouse has a disability or is elderly (62 or older). Families who qualify for a preference move up the wait list faster than other families.
  • Residency Preference:
    • A preference is given to families who live, work or have been hired to work in Kanawha, Clay, or Putnam counties. 
  • Non-elderly Disabled:
    • Non-elderly persons with disabilities transitioning out of institutional and other segregated settings, at serious risk of institutionalization, homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless.

Selected applicants will be placed on the waiting list by date and time the application is received, weighed by order of preferences.

The Charleston-Kanawha Housing Authority (CKHA) waiting list for Public Housing apartments is currently open.

The CKHA is accepting pre-applications for this waiting list from September 9, 2019 at 9:00 am ET, until further notice.

Please note: According to the CKHA, "The Public Housing units are owned by CKHA and are located in Charleston, Dunbar, and Rand. Unit sizes range from studio to six-bedroom apartments."

There are two ways to apply during the opening period:

  1. Complete the online pre-application here. After applying, the required documentation listed below must be submitted to the CKHA within 10 business days.
  2. Open and print the paper pre-application online here. Paper pre-applications will be available until March 31, 2020.

According to the CKHA, the following documentation is required:

      • A natural disaster including, but not limited to, fire, flood, hurricane, tornado, earthquake, etc. that has caused  the unit to be uninhabitable; and/or
      • Federal, State, or local government action related to code enforcement, public improvement or development.
