These individuals defrauded the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and other federal offices for more than a decade, but now each face up to 25-35 years in prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Occasional reports similar to this are published each year, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-mdla\/pr\/two-convicted-fraudulently-obtaining-over-50000-federal-housing-assistance-funds\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this couple convicted of fraudulently collecting more than $50,000 in funds for Section 8 HCVs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sweeps of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2015\/12\/05\/dozens-busted-for-ripping-off-public-housing-program\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">persons charged of illegally obtaining more than $1 million of Section 8 subsidies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and even <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wwltv.com\/news\/local\/orleans\/big-freedia-sentenced-for-section-8-fraud\/308318745\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pop culture figures sentenced for unjustly receiving Section 8 benefits for years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1688\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1688\" style=\"width: 373px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1688 \" src=\"http:\/\/affordablehousingonline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/ID-100134296.jpg\" width=\"373\" height=\"287\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1688\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Persons who illegally take advantage of affordable housing programs risk several years of jail time for their offenses.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considering the significant steps a person must take and lengthy wait times to receive affordable housing assistance, it is discouraging to see\u00a0these instances happen, while others who truly need the help stay on waiting lists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it is unfortunate that these events occur, the important take away from these reports is that HUD and the housing authorities offering these programs are closely monitoring for this kind of fraud and taking action against persons who commit it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HUD and housing authorities have several policies that are enforced in the event that a tenant is in violation of the program\u2019s requirements. Examples of tenant fraud may include persons living in the unit who are not on the lease or application, receiving assistance while having a voucher issued by a different housing authority, and under-reporting income. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1690\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1690\" style=\"width: 582px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1690 \" src=\"http:\/\/affordablehousingonline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/CFR24.png\" width=\"582\" height=\"276\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1690\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">HUD and housing authorities routinely enforce policies such as these against persons who abuse the system.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although housing offices work hard to verify and keep track of household information, a small number of cases of fraud do\u00a0slip through.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It is important to note that anyone can report fraud. Neighbors, landlords, property managers, authorities, and even previous tenants may be a whistleblower. If you are aware of someone who receives housing assistance fraudulently,\u00a0you should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hudoig.gov\/report-fraud\">report this abuse to HUD<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Persons who report housing fraud may request to remain\u00a0anonymous. However, it is still important to leave an email or phone number with your\u00a0complaint, so an investigator can contact you for further information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many housing authorities make it easy to file a fraud complaint online. A good example of this process is on the website of the Housing Opportunities Commission of Montgomery County, the housing authority for Montgomery County, Maryland. On the housing authority\u2019s front page, there is a drop down menu for information about its rental programs. The bottom of that menu contains a link to report fraud or another program violation. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1691\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1691\" style=\"width: 564px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1691\" src=\"http:\/\/affordablehousingonline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/HOCfinal.png\" width=\"564\" height=\"355\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1691\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Housing Opportunities Commission of Montgomery County makes it easy to report fraud online.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a housing authority does not have an online form, there is likely a fraud hotline available by phone. The number to this line may be available on the housing authority\u2019s website, or as an option when calling the office\u2019s main number.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/affordablehousingonline.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can search our website for housing authority contact information here.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And even if you can\u2019t find any information on how to report fraud to a housing authority, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hudoig.gov\/report-fraud\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HUD\u2019s Office of Inspector General provides information on how to report fraud directly to HUD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Please note that this process is specifically to report persons who are in violation of policies and laws in relation to HUD programs. Complaints such as tenant-landlord disputes, discrimination, and maintenance issues must be reported through other means, which are provided on the HUD OIG website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many who abuse affordable housing programs are caught each year, there are others who continue to illegally receive housing assistance benefits. With the framework set up by housing authorities and HUD, it is easier now than ever before to report these violations and stop the fraud.
