The following are summaries of news for the week of December 1, 2021:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a title=\"Jump to HUD Awards $10 Million For Self-Help Homeownership Opportunities\" href=\"#homeownership\">HUD Awards $10 Million For Self-Help Homeownership Opportunities<\/a><\/li><li><a title=\"Jump to HUD Announces New Staff Appointments\" href=\"#staff\">HUD Announces New Staff Appointments<\/a><\/li><li><a title=\"Jump to HUD Awarded $41 Million in Grants for Persons Living with Aids\" href=\"#hopwa\">HUD Awarded $41 Million in Grants for Persons Living with Aids<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Please note:&nbsp;<\/strong>This news does&nbsp;<strong>not<\/strong>&nbsp;cover waiting list openings for low-income rental assistance programs.&nbsp;<a title=\"Open Section 8 Waiting List Report: November 29, 2021\" href=\"https:\/\/affordablehousingonline.com\/blog\/open-section-8-waiting-list-report-11-29-2021\/\">The latest waiting list news can be found here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"homeownership\">HUD Awards $10 Million For Self-Help Homeownership Opportunities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Date Posted: November 29, 2021<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HUD announced that it is giving $10 million in Self-Help Homeownership Opportunity Program (SHOP) grants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What this means for renters<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Self-help housing is a method of constructing a house using \u201csweat equity\u201d which empowers a family to become owner-builders of their own home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The funds will be distributed to three organizations involved in enabling homeownership for low-income families through providing self-help housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HUD picked Habitat for Humanity International, Inc. (HFHI); the Housing Assistance Council (HAC); and Community Frameworks (CF) to distribute the funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between the three organizations, HUD hopes to build a minimum of 534 housing units for low income families nationwide, especially for families in rural areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a title=\"HUD awards $10 million to boost self-help homeownership housing opportunities\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hud.gov\/press\/press_releases_media_advisories\/HUD_No_21_194\">More information about the funding can be found here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"staff\">HUD Announces New Staff Appointments<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Date Posted: November 30, 2021<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HUD announced numerous new key appointments to HUD staff positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Newly announced roles include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Deputy Assistant Secretary for Congressional Relations<\/strong>, Office of Congressional and Intergovernmental Relations<\/li><li><strong>Special Assistant<\/strong>, Office of Congressional and Intergovernmental Relations<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Office of Congressional and Intergovernmental Relations coordinates with Congress and other government bodies to promote HUD\u2019s policy goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Policy Advisor<\/strong>, Office of Policy Development and Research<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Office of Policy Development and Research both conducts and reviews research on the effectiveness of HUD&#8217;s programs, and general housing issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Director on Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Equity<\/strong>, Office of the Secretary<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Office of the Secretary is where work is conducted by HUD Secretary Marcia L. Fudge, and her staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Special Assistant<\/strong>, Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity enforces housing, and other discriminatory policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Senior Advisor<\/strong>, Office of the Deputy Secretary<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Office of the Deputy Secretary is where work is done by HUD Deputy Secretary Adrianne Todman, and her staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What this means for renters<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While a number of HUD administration roles continue to be vacant, continuing to build HUD\u2019s staff can help the department perform its roles better. Having the staff needed to accomplish HUD\u2019s goals helps in several different ways that may not even be felt directly by renters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a title=\"HUD announces key staff appointments\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hud.gov\/press\/press_releases_media_advisories\/HUD_No_21_195\">A full list of the new staff appointments can be found here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hopwa\">HUD Awarded $41 Million in Grants for Persons Living with Aids<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Date Posted: December 1, 2021&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HUD announced it has awarded $41 million to 20 local governments and nonprofits in Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA) funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What this means for renters<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The HOPWA grants are part of HUD\u2019s mission to \u201cprovide access to high-quality and culturally competent services, including housing and supportive services that are non-stigmatizing, non-discriminatory, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of persons living with HIV\/AIDS.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a title=\"HUD awards $41 million in HOPWA grants to provide housing to low-income persons living with HIV and their families\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hud.gov\/press\/press_releases_media_advisories\/HUD_No_21_196\">The full list of grantees and their project summaries can be found here.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Disclaimer: Affordable Housing Online is not affiliated with HUD, or any HUD agency.
