{"id":4995,"date":"2022-02-09T15:43:56","date_gmt":"2022-02-09T15:43:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/affordablehousingonline.com\/blog\/?p=4995"},"modified":"2023-01-26T21:18:17","modified_gmt":"2023-01-26T21:18:17","slug":"hud-news-in-review-02-09-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/affordablehousingonline.com\/blog\/hud-news-in-review-02-09-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"HUD News in Review: February 9, 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/affordablehousingonline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/2.9.22-HUD-NEWS.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/affordablehousingonline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/2.9.22-HUD-NEWS.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4996\" width=\"474\" height=\"331\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p> <p><em>Disclaimer: Affordable Housing Online is not affiliated with HUD, or any HUD agency.<\/em><\/p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week&#8217;s HUD events include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a title=\"Jump to HUD partners with agencies to modernize Puerto Rico\u2019s energy grid\" href=\"#pr\">HUD partners with agencies to modernize Puerto Rico\u2019s energy grid<\/a><\/li><li><a title=\"Jump to Part 1 of \u201821 Homeless Assessment Report released\" href=\"#homeless\">Part 1 of \u201821 Homeless Assessment Report released<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"pr\">HUD partners with agencies to modernize Puerto Rico\u2019s energy grid<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Date Posted: February 2, 2022<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HUD has joined forces with Homeland Security, the Department of Energy, and Puerto Rico to accelerate work on building back the island\u2019s energy grid and advancing new projects to ensure Puerto Rico\u2019s future supply of energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal is to have 100% renewable electricity and improvement of the island\u2019s resiliency when facing hurricanes and other types of disasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Memorandum of Understanding was executed and kickstarted the PR100 Study, which is a plan to help Puerto Rico meet its energy goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few of the initiatives included in the plan are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><em>FEMA Permanent Work Projects Construction.<\/em><br>According to the HUD press release, \u201cat least 138 projects will be under construction bidding or have begun initial construction activities, including island-wide substation repairs, the replacement of thousands of streetlights across five municipalities, and the creation of an early warning system to improve dam safety\u201d.<\/li><li><em>Implementation of $1.9 billion in HUD grant funding for electrical power system improvements<\/em><br>HUD wants to help Puerto Rico enhance electrical system reliability and resilience which includes the development of both small and large microgrids and a focus on community investments for vulnerable populations and low-and moderate-income households.<\/li><li><em>Launch an Emergency Preparedness Tool Ahead of the 2022 Hurricane Season<\/em><br>Department of Energy and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) are developing a tool that will combine detailed models of the Puerto Rico electric system with hurricane forecasting to help the Government of Puerto Rico better prepare in the days leading up to a hurricane.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department of Energy is holding a public informational webinar on February 16, 2022 at 12:00 pm Atlantic Time to offer additional details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a title=\"Launch Event -- Puerto Rico Grid Resilience and Transition to 100% Renewable Energy Study (PR100)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/oe\/launch-event-puerto-rico-grid-resilience-and-transition-100-renewable-energy-study-pr100\">Visit the event page here to learn more and register for the event.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"homeless\">Part 1 of \u201821 Homeless Assessment Report released<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Date Posted: February 4, 2022<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HUD\u2019s Part 1 of their 2021 Homeless Assessment Report showed that more than 326,000 people were living in shelters on a single night in 2021. This is a decrease of 8% from 2020.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Individuals considered as living in shelters were those found in emergency shelters, transitional housing, or other temporary forms of housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of COVID-19, HUD did not require the count of unsheltered people living on the streets or in other outdoor areas. However, 36% of all communities did complete full unsheltered counts and an additional 72 communities conducted a partial count, in which total unsheltered counts were reported but not household or demographic characteristics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report showed that the number of homeless families with children dropped in 2021, and the number of homeless veterans dropped by 10%. However, the number of chronically homeless went up by 20%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People of color continued to make up a large percentage of America\u2019s homeless population, with 55% of all homeless individuals being African American, Native American, Asian, or Pacific Islanders. 45% of all homeless persons were White, and 22% were Hispanic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a title=\"The 2021 Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR) to Congress\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huduser.gov\/portal\/sites\/default\/files\/pdf\/2021-AHAR-Part-1.pdf\">Read the full 2021 Homeless Assessment Report Part 1 report here.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Disclaimer: Affordable Housing Online is not affiliated with HUD, or any HUD agency.
