But once they get their rental assistance, it can be hard to find a landlord that will accept their voucher.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a title=\"S.4485 - Fair Housing Improvement Act of 2022 - Congress.gov\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/senate-bill\/4485\/text\">The Fair Housing Improvement Act of 2022<\/a> would ban source of income (SOI) discrimination througout the country. It would also bar landlords from discriminating against veterans and active military service members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill was introduced in the Senate by Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) and in the House by Representative Scott Peters (D-CA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a title=\"Kaine Introduces Bill to Protect Veterans and Low-Income Families from Housing Discrimination - Kaine.senate.gov\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kaine.senate.gov\/press-releases\/06\/23\/2022\/kaine-introduces-bill-to-protect-veterans-and-low-income-families-from-housing-discrimination\">When announcing the bill<\/a>, Senator Kaine stressed why these protections are so important.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cAs a former fair housing attorney, I\u2019ve witnessed how affordable housing can provide stability and open the door to opportunity \u2013 but I\u2019ve also seen how housing discrimination unjustly locks people out of that opportunity.\u201d<\/p><cite>Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill proposes adding \u201csource of income,\u201d \u201cveteran status,\u201d and \u201cmilitary status\u201d to the list of protected classes under the Fair Housing Act. The Fair Housing Act makes it illegal to deny housing on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation) familial status, and disability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adding source of income to the Fair Housing Act\u2019s protected classes would protect low-income renters throughout the entire country. <a title=\"Source of Income Discrimination in Housing - Affordable Housing Online\" href=\"https:\/\/affordablehousingonline.com\/source-of-income-antidiscrimination-laws\">Just a few states and local jurisdictions have laws banning discrimination based on a tenant\u2019s source of income<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a title=\"Prohibiting Discrimination Against Renters Using Housing Vouchers Improves Results - Center on Budget and Policy Priorities\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/research\/housing\/prohibiting-discrimination-against-renters-using-housing-vouchers-improves-results\">Only one in three households with voucher lives in a place with laws against source of income discrimination<\/a>. In places without these protections, it is perfectly legal for landlords to reject applicants just because they have a voucher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Homeless veterans have sometimes had trouble finding landlords to accept VASH vouchers. These are Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers coupled with supportive services to help veterans regain stable housing. The program has played a large role in <a title=\"Annual HUD report shows rise in homelessness for third year - Affordable Housing Online\" href=\"https:\/\/affordablehousingonline.com\/blog\/annual-hud-report-shows-rise-in-homelessness-for-third-year\/\">reducing homelessness among veterans over the past decade<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers are a life-saver for millions of low-income renters. But discrimination against people relying on this assistance not only puts families at risk of homelessness. It also limits housing choice and maintains segregated neighborhoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This legislation would make it significantly easier for Section 8 voucher holders to find
