Affordable Housing Online is tracking the status of the The Housing Authority of Newport Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Waiting List. This is what we know as of our most recent update on April 29th, 2016.

The Housing Authority of Newport (HAN) Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list is currently closed. It was last open for two weeks in April 2016.

Please note: This waiting list has preferences. This means that applicants who qualify for these preferences will receive assistance before applicants who do not. Because of these preferences, applicants who do not qualify may have a longer wait to receive assistance.

There were two ways to apply during the opening period:

  1. Complete the online application.
  2. Pick up an application at the Florence Gray Center.

Once the paper application has been completed, it must have been:


  1. Faxed to the HAN Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Office.
  2. Hand delivered to the HAN Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Office.
  3. Mailed to the HAN Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Office.

This waiting list has the following preferences: Work or live in the City of Newport.

Applicants were placed on the waiting list by date and time of application submission, after sorting preferences.

Important note: Applicants who have been placed on the waiting list must inform the housing authority immediately if your application information changes (such as contact information, income, and household members). In the case that the office sends a notice that does not get returned, or if application information is out of date, your name may be terminated from the waiting list. Contact the housing authority to find out how to update application information.

Public Housing Waiting List Status : Open

The Housing Authority of Newport (HAN) is currently accepting Public Housing waiting list applications for families and senior/disabled households.

The HAN offers 10 Public Housing communities with 710 units for families and senior/disabled households.

There are three ways to apply:
  1. Visit the HAN Management Office to pick up an application, located at 1 Park Holm, Newport, RI 02840, between the hours of 8:30 am until 4:30 pm, Monday, Tuesday and Friday.
  2. Download an application here, then print and complete.
  3. Complete the online application here.
Once the application has been completed, it can be hand delivered to the address listed above.

This waiting list has the following preferences: Live and/or work in the City of Newport, elderly, disabled, employed, household is a resident or Section 8 participant of the Housing Authority of Newport, household is a resident of Park Holm, household has been pre-approved for a mortgage.

The The Housing Authority of Newport administers both a public housing and Section 8 housing voucher program. The housing authority owns and manages 10 projects which contain 710 affordable rental units. It also administers 489 Section 8 housing vouchers.

Housing Authority Annual and 5 Year Plans

Public housing agencies, also called public housing authorities, which receive funding from HUD, are required to submit and receive approval from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development of both an Annual Plan and a 5 Year Plan. These plans establish each housing authority’s policies, strategies, programs and operations for meeting the housing needs of persons within their target area.

The housing authority plans include specific details about the cost of renovations to real estate (also known as capital improvements), changes to Section 8 HCV policies, planned redevelopment of public housing projects and other major administrative changes.
