Closed: Minneapolis, Minnesota Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Waiting List

The Minneapolis Public Housing Authority (MPHA) Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list is currently closed. It was last open for one week in June, 2019; and before that in June, 2008. There is no notice of when this waiting list will reopen.

To apply during the opening period, applicants were required to complete the online application.

2,000 applicants were placed on the waiting list by random lottery, by order of preference.

According to the MPHA, "The housing authority will award 95% of waiting list placements to applicants who live, work, or attend school in Minneapolis. The remaining 5% of waiting list placements will be awarded to any other applicant. The residency preference does not have the purpose or effect of delaying or otherwise denying admission based on race, color, ethnic origin, gender, religion, disability, or age of any member of the applicant family."

Closed: 3, 4 and 5-Bedroom Family Public Housing Waiting List

This waiting list is for Public Housing rental housing assistance in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The Minneapolis Public Housing Authority (MPHA) Family Public Housing waiting list for  apartments is currently closed. The 3, 4 and 5 bedroom waiting lists was last open in October 2024 and November 2021. The 2 bedroom public housing waiting list was only open in November 2021 and remained closed in 2024.

The MPHA is accepted applications for this waiting list from October 10, 2024 at 8:00 am, until October 15, 2024 at 12:00 pm CT.

The maximum income limit for each household size were as follows:

  • 2 Persons $78,250 | 6 Persons $113,450 
  • 3 Persons 88,050 | 7 Persons $121,800 
  • 4 Persons $97,800 | 8 Persons $129,100
  • 5 Persons $105,650 

Preferences for the October 2024 waiting list opening have not been confirmed but the preferences for the 2021 opening were:

  • Homeless/ Displaced/VAWA: Involuntarily displaced; homeless; living in substandard housing; or a VAWA victim who has been involuntarily displaced.
  • Household consists of a dependent family member: Household has at least one dependent family member. A dependent is a child under 18 yrs. of age, disabled person, or a full time student.
  • Paying over 50%: Paying more than 50% of income for rent and utilities.
  • Self sufficiency: Actively participating in an economic self sufficiency program or a student.
  • Veteran: Served in the U.S. Military and honorably discharged.

1,500 applicants were placed on the waiting list by random lottery.

The Minneapolis Public Housing Authority (MPHA) is accepting Senior Public Housing waiting list applications from October, 2021, until further notice.

Please note: This program is only for 1 and 2 person households.

There are three ways to apply while the waitlist is open:

  1. Complete the online application.
  2. Complete the application in person at the MPHA office; located at 1001 Washington Avenue North, Minneapolis, MN 55401; from 8:00 am until 3:30 pm CT; Monday-Friday
  3. Call MPHA at (612) 342-1390 to request an application mailed.
  4. Email MPHAapplications@mplspha.org to request an application mailed.

The Minneapolis Public Housing Authority (MPHA) is accepting Near-Elderly (50-61) Public Housing waiting list applications from the earliest confirmed open date of October, 2021, until further notice.

Please note: This program is only for 1 and 2 person households.

To apply while the waitlist is open, print the paper application. Select the PDF link for the application.

Once the application has been completed, it must be either:

  1. Mailed to: Minneapolis Public Housing Authority, ATTN: Public Housing Applications, 1001 Washington Avenue North, Minneapolis, MN 55401.
  2. Dropped off at the MPHA drop box in the front vestibule, located at 1001 Washington Avenue North, Minneapolis, Minnesota, 55401 on weekdays (except for holidays) from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm CT.

This waiting list has the following preferences: Near-Elderly, disabled, veteran, homeless, displaced by natural disaster, victim of domestic violence, displaced by government action, student or participant of self-sufficiency program, living in substandard housing. 

It is not known how applicants will be placed on the waiting list.

Open Until Further Notice: Minneapolis Public Housing Authority Disabled Public Housing Waiting List

The Minneapolis Public Housing Authority (MPHA) is accepting Disabled Public Housing waiting list applications for this waiting list as of October, 2021, until further notice.

Please note: This program is only for 1 and 2 person households.

According to the MPHA, "If you are disabled, you must provide proof of your disability (such as receiving Social Security Income or Social Security Disability Income). If you are applying as a disabled individual and are not receiving SSI Disability Income, you must provide a Request for Medical Information Form completed by your physician. This must accompany your pre-application. You must also be the Head of Household or Co-head of Household."

To apply while the waitlist is open, print the paper application. Select the PDF link for the application.
