The Municipal Housing Authority for the City of Yonkers (MHACY) Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list is closed.

The MHACY last accepted applications for this waiting list from June 27, 2022, until July 13, 2022. There is no notice of when this waiting list will reopen.

To apply during the opening period, applicants were required to print the paper application.

Once the application was completed, it was postmarked by July 13, 2022, and mailed to the Municipal Housing Authority for the City of Yonkers.

The maximum income limit for each household size were listed on the application.

This waiting list had the following preferences:

  • A family whose head or co-head is a Veteran. The term "Veteran" means any person honorably discharged from the United States Armed Forces, to wit the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and/or Space Force.
  • Families with children or elderly or disabled members.
  • Homeless families, as defined in 42 U.S.C. Section 11302 and contained in the Continuum of Care Interim Rule at 24 CFR 578.3
  • A family whose head and/or co-head is the grandparent of the remaining family members.
  • Any Family who lives in the City of Yonkers, or any family whose head or other member is employed in the City of Yonkers.
  • Currently assisted under any HUD Program.

3,000 applicants were placed on the waiting list by random lottery.

The Municipal Housing Authority of the City of Yonkers (MHACY) is currently accepting Public Housing waiting list pre-applications for senior households.

Please note: The family Public Housing waiting list is currently closed.

This waiting list only offers studios and one bedroom units.

According to the 2016 PSH database, persons who were issued a voucher in the preceding 12 months waited an average of 33 months on the waiting list1.

Income Characteristics

According to 2016 Q4 Picture of Subsidized Households data, the average voucher household contains 2.3 persons and has a household income of $20,701 per year. 95% of households were very low income (VLI) and 75% were extremely low income (ELI). 46% of households had wages as a major source of income, 5% of households had welfare (TANF, General Assistance or Public Assistance) as their primary source of income, and 48% of households had other income (Social Security, Disability or Pension) as their major source of income.

Heads of Household Characteristics

1% of households were headed by a person 24 years old or less, 45% were headed by a person 25 to 49 years old, 27% were headed by a person 51 to 60 years old, and 27% were headed by a person 62 years old or older. In addition, 1% of households were headed by a person 85 years old or older.

40% of households included children, 5% of which had two adults in the household. 38% of households with children have a female head of household. 86% of all households were headed by a female.
