Waiting List Details

The Brunswick County Public Housing Agency (BCPHA) Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list for persons displaced by Hurricane Florence is currently open on a limited basis, until August 6, 2019 at 5:00 pm ET.

Please note: According to the BCPHA, applicants must have "proof that they were displaced due to the storm. Acceptable proof of displacement includes a letter from FEMA stating that the household could not return to the home or a letter from the insurance company stating that the household was unable to return to the home."

There are two ways to apply:

  1. Complete the application at the BCPHA office, located in Building B of the Brunswick County Government Complex at 60 Government Center Drive, Bolivia, North Carolina, 28422, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am to 5 pm.
  2. Call (910) 253- 2222 to request an application by mail, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am until 5:00 pm

Once the paper application has been completed, it must be dropped off at the BCPHA office at address above, during office hours.

Preferences have not yet been confirmed.

Selected applicants will be placed on the waiting list by date and time the application is received.

According to the 2016 Q4 Picture of Subsidized Households database, the housing authority's voucher program has an annual turnover of 7% having issued approximately 53 vouchers in the past year. The average voucher holder has received housing benefits for 6 years and 11 months. According to the 2016 PSH database, persons who were issued a voucher in the preceding 12 months waited an average of 15 months on the waiting list1.

Income Characteristics

According to 2016 Q4 Picture of Subsidized Households data, the average voucher household contains 2.2 persons and has a household income of $11,517 per year. 96% of households were very low income (VLI) and 76% were extremely low income (ELI). 24% of households had wages as a major source of income, 1% of households had welfare (TANF, General Assistance or Public Assistance) as their primary source of income, and 73% of households had other income (Social Security, Disability or Pension) as their major source of income.

Heads of Household Characteristics

3% of households were headed by a person 24 years old or less, 44% were headed by a person 25 to 49 years old, 25% were headed by a person 51 to 60 years old, and 29% were headed by a person 62 years old or older. In addition, 2% of households were headed by a person 85 years old or older.

42% of households included children, 4% of which had two adults in the household. 39% of households with children have a female head of household. 85% of all households were headed by a female.

50% of all voucher households were headed by minorities with 45% of all heads of households being Black and -1% being Hispanic.

Of all households participating in the Brunswick County Public Housing Agency Housing Choice Voucher program, 31% include at least one person with a disability. 48% of households with a head of household 61 years or less were headed by a person with a disability. 80% of households headed by someone 62 or older were headed by a person with a disability.
