The Cortland Housing Authority (CHA) Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list is currently open until further notice.
There are two ways to apply:

This waiting list has the following preferences: Elderly, handicapped/disabled, families, Cortland County residents.
Qualified applicants will be place on the waiting list by the date and time the application isreceived, by order of preferences.
Please note: Those who do not qualify for the residency preference will be placed at the bottom of the waiting list, and will always be below applicants who do qualify for the residency preference. Because of this, according to a CHA representative, it is unlikely names on the waiting list without the residency preference will ever reach the top of the waiting list.
After applying, applicants will receive a letter notifying them if they were eligible, or not.

Fortunately, we can provide some helpful statistics using HUD's 2023 Picture of Subsidized Households. The following data describes the economic and demographic characteristics of renters who have a Section or project-based voucher issued by Cortland Housing Authority.

The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program pays 70% of the cost of rent plus utilities for any household receiving the housing assistance.
For the Cortland Housing Authority Section 8 program, the federal government is providing, on average, $530 per month to each household, for an average annual cost of $6,360. The program as a whole is paying landlords $155,820 per month, for an annual economic benefit to landlords of $1,869,840
