Here are the latest announcements by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD):

Indianapolis Housing Agency faces a financial crisis

The Indianapolis Housing Agency (IHA) is facing an assortment of problems ranging from shortages of maintenance workers, $10 million in debt, past mistakes in applying for federal funds, and problems with accounting of funds. 

A HUD review uncovered financial problems for IHA reaching as far back as 2019. 

Tenants in its Public Housing developments have been complaining for years about the living conditions, lack of repairs and long term infestation of bedbugs.

Air conditioning in two IHA properties for housing elderly and disabled tenants are in need of repair. and not working while Indianapolis is currently suffering through a week-long heat wave with daytime temperatures reaching in the high 90s.

The IHA is reviewing the possible sale-off of some of its housing properties to pay their debts.

New mixed-income apartment complex opens in New Orleans

A new apartment complex in New Orleans, Louisiana, called BonVi opens today.

Twelve of the 69 units will be set aside for low-income households. The building also includes 3,600 square feet of retail space.

The apartments feature Energy Star stainless steel appliances, quartz counters, private laundry, central air, and ceiling fans. The complex offers a rooftop pool, private parking, off street secure bike parking, package room, exercise room and a co-working space for an extra monthly fee.

New Orleans-based Iris Development and Green Coast Enterprises developed the building and it was built by Ryan Gootee General Contractors. The builders state that BonVi is pet-friendly and currently accepting lease applications.

New affordable developments open in Montana

Two new affordable housing apartment complexes opened up for low-income tenants in Bozeman, Montana this month.

The new Perennial and Arrowleaf Apartments located off North 19th Avenue in Bozeman, offer a combined total of 238 affordable one, two and three bedroom apartments for eligible families and seniors.

The apartments were built by Seattle-based GMD Development and the Human Resources Development Council (HRDC) of Bozeman, using tax credits and funding from the city of Bozeman. Income qualifications for families and seniors (over 55) are less than 60% of the area median income; $41,760 for an individual and $59,640 for a family of four.

Currently in Bozeman, one-bedroom apartments may rent for nearly $2,000, qualifying residents at the Perennial Park apartments pay $1,119 for a one-bedroom; $1,342 for a two-bedroom; and $1,551 for a three-bedroom.

Each apartment will have stainless steel appliances, vinyl plank flooring, washers and dryers and balconies or patios. The new apartments will also come with access to childcare and health services nearby, and be within walking distance of a supermarket and other stores, restaurants and shops.
