Update: A new eviction moratorium that protects renters until October 3rd has been issued by the CDC.
Any renter who is behind on rent now faces eviction, after the CDC eviction ban (also known as a moratorium) expired on July 31, 2021.
The moratorium was first established in September, 2020 to help renters struggling to pay rent during the coronavirus pandemic. It was originally set to expire on December 31, 2020; but was extended by the White House multiple times, as the pandemic carried on.
However, in June of this year, a case challenging the eviction moratorium reached the Supreme Court. It was decided that the moratorium would be kept in place, but the Executive Office (White House) could not continue to extend the national policy.
Action to extend the moratorium past July 31st was left to Congress, but they failed to pass legislation in time. Congress now is in recess until late-September. This guarantees that there will be no special eviction protections for renters until at least the end of next month.
It is not known if Congress will be able to pass legislation in the future to enact an eviction ban again.
