The Cooper House Apartments, a development of Beyond Shelter, Inc., opened in May of 2010. This 42 unit building was constructed to provide permanent supportive housing for people who are coming out of homelessness. The project provides a secure environment with service providers on site to connect residents to the help they need to gain stability in their lives. Services include case management, substance abuse treatment, mental health treatment, medication monitoring, life skills training, and job skills training, to name a few. The project has strong support from the community and involves many third party providers. Units are furnished and local sponsors have stocked each apartment with basic necessities.
Because Cooper House Apartments participates in HUD's HOME program for rental housing and the LIHTC program, at least some of the units in this property are set aside for households earning 60% or less of the AMI and rents are capped at the local FMR and in many cases much lower. Depending on the number of HOME-designated units, additional units may have even lower household income requirements and corresponding lower rent caps.
